Gorillas
Gorilla trekking in Rwanda is one of Africa’s most powerful and exclusive safari experiences. Set within the lush, misty mountains of Volcanoes National Park, this adventure brings you face to face with endangered mountain gorillas in their natural habitat—an encounter that is both rare and deeply moving.
The journey begins early in the morning with a briefing from experienced park rangers. You’ll be assigned to a small group and a specific gorilla family, ensuring a controlled and respectful experience. From there, you trek through dense rainforest, bamboo zones, and volcanic slopes, guided by expert trackers who follow signs left by the gorillas.
The hike can take anywhere from 1 to 6 hours depending on the location of the gorilla family, but every step is part of the adventure—filled with birdlife, forest sounds, and stunning scenery. When you finally find the gorillas, you are allowed one hour in their presence. During this time, you can quietly observe their behavior: young ones playing, mothers caring for infants, and the dominant silverback watching over the group.

Gorilla trekking is strictly regulated to protect the animals. Only a limited number of permits are issued each day, making the experience intimate and sustainable. The cost of the permit also contributes directly to conservation efforts and supports local communities living around the park.

Chimpanzees
Chimpanzee trekking in Nyungwe National Park is one of the most exciting primate experiences in Rwanda. Set in one of Africa’s oldest montane rainforests, the park is home to a large population of habituated chimpanzees living freely in dense, untouched wilderness.

Your experience begins early in the morning with a guided briefing before entering the forest with expert trackers. As you move through thick jungle trails, you’ll follow fresh calls, broken branches, and distant sounds echoing through the canopy until you finally locate the chimpanzee community.
Watching them is dynamic and lively—chimps swing through trees, groom each other, play, and communicate loudly, offering a fascinating glimpse into their social world. The encounter is typically allowed for one hour, making it intense, immersive, and unforgettable.
Beyond chimpanzees, Nyungwe National Park is rich in biodiversity, with colobus monkeys, rare bird species, orchids, and scenic forest trails, including the famous canopy walkway.

Colobus Monkeys
Colobus monkeys are some of the most striking primates found in the forests of East Africa, known for their long white tails, flowing black-and-white fur, and graceful movements through the treetops.

In Rwanda, they are commonly seen in Nyungwe National Park, where large troops move through the forest canopy in groups, often leaping effortlessly between tall trees. Their social behavior and constant activity make them a favorite sight for visitors exploring the rainforest.
In Uganda, colobus monkeys can also be spotted in forests such as Kibale National Park and other woodland areas, where they share the habitat with chimpanzees and other primates.
These monkeys are primarily leaf-eaters, often resting in the canopy between feeding sessions. Their haunting calls echo through the forest, adding to the wild atmosphere of the jungle.
Observing colobus monkeys is a peaceful and rewarding part of any primate safari, offering a glimpse into the quieter but equally fascinating side of Africa’s rainforest ecosystems.
