6 - Days Rwanda Chimpanzee & Gorilla safari

Kigali | Nyungwe Forest | Chimpanzees | Gorillas & Golden Monkeys

Day 1: Arrival in Kigali – Transfer to Nyungwe Forest National Park

Upon arrival at Kigali International Airport, guests will be warmly welcomed by our professional safari guide before departing for Nyungwe Forest National Park in southwestern Rwanda. The scenic journey offers beautiful views of Rwanda’s rolling hills, traditional villages, and lush countryside.

Along the way, guests may stop for lunch and visit selected cultural and historical attractions, including the King’s Palace Museum in Nyanza or local craft markets. The drive continues through Rwanda’s famous tea-growing region before arriving at Nyungwe Forest National Park.

After check-in at the lodge, guests can relax and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of the rainforest.

Chimpanzee Trekking & Canopy Walk in Nyungwe Forest

After an early breakfast, guests will head to the park headquarters for a briefing before beginning the chimpanzee trekking experience in Nyungwe Forest. Guided by experienced trackers, guests will walk through the rainforest in search of chimpanzees while also spotting other primates, colorful birdlife, and unique forest vegetation.

Once the chimpanzees are located, guests will spend time observing their behavior and interactions in their natural habitat. After the trek, guests will return to the lodge for lunch.

In the afternoon, guests will enjoy the famous canopy walkway experience, suspended high above the forest floor and offering spectacular views across the rainforest canopy.

Day 3: Guided Nature Walk – Transfer to Volcanoes National Park

Following breakfast, guests will enjoy a guided nature walk through Nyungwe Forest, discovering waterfalls, bird species, and the rich biodiversity of the park.

After the forest walk, the journey continues north toward Volcanoes National Park, home to Rwanda’s endangered mountain gorillas. The drive offers incredible views of Rwanda’s countryside, lakes, and volcanic landscapes.

Depending on arrival time, guests may visit a local cultural village to experience traditional Rwandan music, dance, and community activities.

Day 4: Gorilla Trekking Experience – Visit the Twin Lakes

After an early breakfast, guests will transfer to the Volcanoes National Park headquarters in Kinigi for a briefing by park rangers before beginning the unforgettable gorilla trekking adventure.

The trek takes guests through bamboo forests and mountain slopes in search of one of the habituated gorilla families. Trekking time varies depending on the gorillas’ location, but once found, guests will spend one magical hour observing these gentle giants in their natural environment.

Following the trek, guests will return to the lodge for lunch before visiting the scenic Twin Lakes of Burera and Ruhondo, known for their peaceful atmosphere and beautiful volcanic scenery.

Day 5: Mount Bisoke Hiking Adventure

Today guests will enjoy a guided hike to Mount Bisoke, one of the scenic volcanoes within the Virunga Mountain range. The hike passes through beautiful rainforest vegetation and offers opportunities to spot birds and other wildlife along the trail.

At the summit, guests will be rewarded with breathtaking views of the crater lake and surrounding volcanoes. After descending, guests will return to the lodge to relax and enjoy the evening.

Day 6: Return to Kigali – Departure

After breakfast, guests will depart for Kigali. Depending on flight schedules, there may be time for a short Kigali city tour, including visits to local markets, craft centers, or historical sites.

Guests will later be transferred to Kigali International Airport for their onward flight, marking the end of their Rwanda primate safari experience.
